Put in the work now, and you’ll be rewarded with a garden that’s ready and waiting for you when the time comes. But what exactly is that work, and when is the best time to do it?

In this piece, we’ll walk you through a general overview of our all-season garden services, helping you understand what to focus on and when, so you can enjoy the very best of your outdoor space every day of the year.

As the old song goes, “Make your garden grow”!

Different Types of All Seasons Garden Services

Every stage of our all-seasons garden services is different, with its own priorities and challenges. Now, seeing as every new year in the UK starts with winter, that’s where we’ll begin our guide.

Sharpen those tools. Let’s dig in.

Winter Garden Maintenance Services

Understandably, most of us lack motivation in winter to get stuck into some gardening. It’s wet, cold, and inevitably muddy. But we must understand that the vision of a beautiful garden that blooms in spring and sustains through summer is made here.

Planting

If you enjoy harvesting your own produce, winter is the time to plant your hardy vegetables and herbs. These plants include:

  • Hardy Greens – Kale, Spinach, Arugula, Chard, Mustard Greens, & Tatsoi.
  • Root Vegetables – Carrots, Parsnips, Beets, & Radishes.
  • Alliums – Garlic Cloves.
  • Brassicas – Broccoli, Sprouts, & Cabbage.
  • Herbs – Cilantro, Parsley, Thyme, & Rosemary.

Pruning

Likewise with your veg and herbs, winter is the ideal occasion for cultivating your fruit by pruning trees and bushes alongside other pruning tasks:

  • Fruit Trees – Apple & Pear.
  • Fruit Bushes – Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, & Redcurrants.
  • Roses - Shrub & Climbing Roses
  • Deciduous Trees & Shrubs – Beech, Hazel, Hornbeam, & Overgrown Deciduous Shrubs.
  • Climbers – Clematis & Wisteria.

Grounds Maintenance

While a lot less grows in the winter due to the temperature, it’s beneficial to get ahead where you can with some proactive grounds maintenance to reduce the workload when the weather improves:

  • Weeding Remove weeds to reduce spring/summer workload.
  • Mulching – Spread your mulched compost across flower beds, shrubs and young trees.
  • Lawn Keep off it as much as possible to reduce damage.
  • Power Washing – Remove grime from patio areas to avoid slips.
  • Leaf Clearing – Rake up fallen leaves and dump them in your compost.

Structural Repairs

As plants lie dormant, you can take the opportunity to repair any fences, gates, and sheds. Choose a dry day if possible, especially if any digging is involved.

Spring Garden Maintenance Services

You’ve made it through winter, and now those long-awaited buds are finally starting to bloom. The work you put in over the colder months is springing to life before your eyes.

Springtime invites us to enjoy the beauty of our gardens again, but reminds us that an all-seasons garden maintenance approach is essential for keeping everything thriving.

Planting

As things grow and take shape around you, you can continue the flow of colourful momentum right into summer by planting the following:

  • Bulbs & Tubers Dahlias, Lilies, Begonias, Alliums, Nerines, Crocosmia, Gladioli, Tulips, & Daffodils.
  • Vegetables – Lettuce, Spinach, Carrots, Peas, Onions, Potatoes, Beets, Cauliflower, Shallots, Runner Beans, Tomatoes, Courgettes, Cucumber, Pumpkins, & Sweetcorn.
  • Annuals – Marigolds, Cosmos, Poppies, Sweet Peas, & Nasturtiums.
  • Perennials & Shrubs – Roses, Hydrangeas, & Honeysuckle.

Grounds Maintenance

The long days and verdant earth of spring can make us quickly forget the dark winter. But in this renewed warmth and light, everything inevitably starts growing like mad! Now comes the difficult task of keeping on top of it:

Pruning

If all your ground maintenance tasks weren’t keeping you busy enough, it’s worth carrying your secateurs around with you for occasional pruning and cutting back:

  • Summer Flowering Shrubs – Buddleia, Fuchsia, Hardy Hibiscus, & Clematis.
  • Winter Stems/Foliage – Cornus (Dogwood), & Cotinus.
  • Ornamental Grasses Miscanthus Sinensis, Karl Foerster, Panicum Virgatum, & Pennisetum.
  • Evergreen Shrubs – Laurel, Box, Yew, Cherry Laurel, Holly & Photinia (Red Robin).

Wildlife/Environment Awareness

Despite the urge to cultivate your garden, spring is the time to take care of your local wildlife and environment:

Summer Garden Maintenance Services

Now, we should be at the best of the weather, let’s continue our all-seasons garden services with what we should prioritise in the summer.

Planting

Maximise the good weather by planting quick crops and flowers that can produce instant colour:

  • Vegetables – Radish, Lettuce, Rocket, Spinach, Carrots, Beetroot, Turnips, Dwarf French Beans, Runner Beans, & Fennel.
  • Flowers – Dahlia, Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Petunia, Geraniums, Verbena, Lavender, Fuchsia, & Marigolds.
  • Biennials – Foxgloves, Wallflowers, & Sweet Williams.

Pruning

Plants, shrubs and trees will be reaching their peak of growth, and you may need to trim back to keep things under control:

  • Shrubs & Climbers – Philadelphus (Mock Orange), Weigela, Deutzia, Forsythia, Kerria, Hebe, Box,  Lavender, & Wisteria.
  • Fruit Trees – Apples, Pears, Plums, & Cherries.
  • Suckers – Remove unwanted shoots at the base of trees and roses.
  • Deadhead Cut away dead flower heads from roses and perennials

Ground Maintenance

As with spring, continue weeding and hoeing your flower beds while keeping your lawn freshly cut.

Watering, Feeding & Harvesting

At the height of summer, plants can easily dry out if you’re not careful. Be sure to be handy with your water cans, ideally collecting water from the water butt you installed in spring.

  • Watering – Flower pots, hanging baskets and any new planting.
  • Feeding – Feed potassium-rich nutrients to vegetables, chicken manure for leafy crops, and high-nitrogen fertilisers to your lawn if it goes brown.
  • Seed Collecting – Store seeds in paper envelopes in a cool, dry place, ready for sowing next year.

Autumn Garden Maintenance Services

Summer is over, and that first crisp chill of autumn is starting to set in. Here are our final all-seasons garden services to complete for the year.

Planting

The joy of spring is seeded here with fresh bulbs, trees, shrubs and roses. Autumn is the ideal time to plant, with the soil still warm and moist, and with enough light to help roots establish.

  • Spring Bulbs – Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus, Hyacinths, & Snowdrops.
  • Hardy Perennials – Geraniums, Echinacea, Heuchera, & Rudbeckia.
  • Autumn Flowering Plants - Cyclamen, Chrysanthemums, & Japanese Anemone.
  • Vegetables – Garlic, Onions, Broad Beans, Kale, Cabbage, Strawberry Runners, & Fruit Trees.
  • Trees & Shrubs – Japanese Maple, Amelanchier Lamarckii, Silver Birch, Crab Apple, Cotinus, Dogwood, & Pyracantha.

Pruning

Unfortunately, autumn is when we see the colour drain from the garden as many of our spring and summer plants start to fade.

A standard rule for pruning or cutting back is, “if it’s brown, cut it down”. Try to wait until it’s completely brown to ensure bulbs and roots replenish as much goodness as possible.

Grounds Maintenance

Finally, it’s time to prepare your landscapes as best you can for winter:

  • Leaf Clearing – Rake up all the fallen leaves to protect your lawn and plants from suffocation and diseases.
  • Aeration – Use a fork to pierce through compacted soil to improve drainage and reduce waterlogging.
  • Mowing – One last cut in a higher setting.
