Garden Design Ideas from Instant Scenery
Here at Instant Scenery, we believe that garden design is just as important as interior design. Your garden should be a place to live, relax, dine and enjoy and now is the perfect time to think about making your outdoor space something amazing.
We’ve put together some tips and ideas to help you to create your ideal look at home.
Pots and Containers
There are many pots and containers on the market and they can be used to add variety to your garden. Lilies, roses, trees, herbs and vegetables work excellently in pots and containers.
NOTE: Generally, the larger the pot and plant, the easier it is to care for it! For low maintenance, colourful pots, think about using lavender. For the more experienced gardener, tomatoes may be an option.
Adding furniture to your garden can make it an excellent space to socialise or relax. Plastic and hardwood furniture can be very easy to maintain needing just the odd annual wash with soap and water. Metal and softwood will need to be treated and checked for damage and rust.
NOTE: Keeping furniture under a cover or in a shed during the winter will prolong it’s life. Tilting the furniture and keeping the feet off wet ground will also help to prevent damage.
Hedges and Walls
These are not only there to protect boundaries but also add character. Depending on your budget, you can choose stone, glass, brick, iron or wood for example to provide a beautiful backdrop to your plants. Hedges and topiary can be used to add a focal point.
NOTE: Hedges will become a habitat for wildlife so expect birds and other animals to be making a home there.
Decking and Paths
We always recommend using a high quality deck. If built and treated properly, they will last for many years to come. There are many deck materials on the market such as hardwood, softwood and composite with non slip technology. Make sure you do your homework and choose the right material for you.
NOTE: Paths and decks can be a feature in their own right. Choosing a beautiful stone for example will add a lot of character, just be sure to keep algae and moss at bay.
Trees are the backbone to any garden and can be used to create many different effects. Maples can be used for colour in Autumn, Birch has a beautiful slim white trunk and fruit trees can provide home grown produce for the garden.
NOTE: Be sure to select trees that are right for you. For easy, year round impact, choose a tree that changes throughout the seasons. A good choice may be Liquid Amber (Liquidambar styraciflua) as this changes colour throughout the year. Another choice may be an ornamental fruit tree such as Crab Apple. You can then make crab apple jelly out the fruit!
Water features come in many shapes and sizes and can include ponds, cascading water falls or fountains. Any water feature will attract wildlife and creates a great focal point.
NOTE: Water pools create a calming effect to your garden and a steady flow of water from a waterfall will enhance this. Jets and bubbles will create a lively, characterful garden so think about what you would like to achieve when incorporating water into your design.
It may be interesting to note that having your garden designed can add value to your property. In some cases, it can be as valuable as having an extension! A neat and tidy garden will always help to sell a house quicker too so bear this in mind when investing in the property.
Hope this helps!
