Top 10 Gardening Tips for August

Here are our top ten gardening tips for August!

  1. Prune Wisteria, deadhead flowering plants regularly and prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming
  2. Water! This applies to containers and new plants. Try to use grey recycled water or stored rainwater. Don’t forget to keep ponds and water features topped up
  3. Feed the soil with green manures
  4. Cut back herbs now to encourage new leaves. These will be ready to harvest before the frost
  5. Don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rain will soon make it green again
  6. Lawn growth slows down in late summer so raise the cutting height of your lawn mower to help the grass cope
  7. Don’t feed your lawn with a high-nitrogen fertiliser now. This will encourage lots of lush new growth which is easily damaged by autumn weather
  8. If you’re planning on laying a new lawn this autumn, prepare the area now so that it has time to settle. This also allows weeds to germinate so you can clear the area thoroughly before planting
  9. Recut any lawn edges if needed. Install lawn edging now to make ongoing maintenance easier
  10. If your lawn is infested by ants, brush out the nests on a dry day. Always brush them away before mowing
